What is clearly visible in Mactan as business opportunities an investments are the hotels, recreation facilities, and restaurants. With this also are the jobs that are offered to the locals or the opportunity for others also to conduct business within the area like the presence of specialty shops or souvenir stores. It is also a fact that most of the large businesses in the area are owned by foreigners where the major operations take place. Furthermore, Lapu-Lapu city is itself a giant in terms of economy due to the presence of big establishments and factories. Over the years, it has been noted that business in Mactan is thriving and surviving. As of now, one of the businesses Mactan has is the real estate industry. More and more companies or private corporations are selling land like pancakes. In fact, more people are making Mactan their home or rather their vacation stopover. Further, these lands for sale attract many foreigners and locals alike. In addition, local industries produce musical instruments, handicrafts, and furniture. These products find their destination in shops on our national market or via export in shops in foreign countries.

However, some believe that Mactan’s potentials has not been fully realised and considered as underexploited, thus to boost the economy of Mactan and to push positive change, a 10-point plan has been realised to maximise the island’s potential as a tourist hub and a location for foreign investments, making the Island a “genuine tourism zone.” This can be made possible through the declaration of the place as under the PEZA or Philippine Economic Zone Authority and the officials hope to materialise this agenda within the year and as realistic a possible. According to some concerned citizens, Mactan is not yet that strong tourism destination and still can be improved and these tackle other areas other than the beaches or the resorts. One agenda tackled is the improvement of the public roads—a very helpful move indeed to make business dealings in Mactan more accessible and hassle-free. The government is taking part in improving the island’s business industry. In fact, a “protocol of cooperation” to establish their partnership with the business and industry sectors in the island has been signed.

A fast rising industry, real estates have its way in Mactan. More and more subdivision are conceptualised and created and they take pride in the serene surroundings of Mactan Island. Moreover, these communities boost with amenities such as landscaped entrance, park and playground, underground drainage system, MCWD supplied water distribution system, electrical power supply, telephone and cable lines, etc. The real estate business industry in the island has spelled success over the years as many opted for a peaceful abode—the ones offered in Mactan. In addition, the presence of these subdivisions and communities has also given rise to other businesses—so much like of a domino effect. Many natives of Mactan offered small stores (known locally as sari-sari store) to cater some needs of the inhabitants though malls can also be found within Lapu-Lapu City, where shoppers frequented also. Lastly, it has been a joint effort of the government and private sectors to make businesses in Mactan lively, flowing, and, of course, income generating.
